I used to think I was just tired. Tired from work, tired from Lagos traffic, tired from life generally.
But it wasn't normal tired.
It was the kind of tired where you wake up more exhausted than when you slept. Where your period disappears for two, three months, then shows up like it's doing you a favor — if it shows up at all. Where you're irritable for no reason, your skin is breaking out like you're 16 again, your hair is thinning at the edges, and your husband is asking why you don't "feel like yourself" anymore — and you don't have an answer for him.
I went to see a doctor. Blood test, scan, "everything is normal, madam." Another doctor, another "just manage stress, it will happen when it happens." Meanwhile, my period kept skipping months, sometimes disappearing for 60, 90 days at a stretch, and somewhere at the back of my mind, I knew something wasn't right. I just didn't know what.
"Four years. That's how long my husband and I had been trying for a baby."
